Huge Evolution in India’s Animation Film Industry

Not many people know that India is one of the oldest animation industries in the world. It was Dadasaheb Phalke made the first animated movie with matchsticks, coins and stop motion camera techniques in 1914. Indian animation industry is required to achieve a record of 1.2 billion by 2012. It is surely a vast upsurge for about 27% since 2008.

Yet, India’s industry evolution began in 1950. It was Clair Weeks, a Disney Studios animator visited India to teach newcomers in the theories of classical animation. Main result was shown around 1970 in which Bhimsain and Ram Mohan—Weeks’s apprenticeship—pioneered and improved their independent animation studios. Sorry to say that due to lack of government and marketing support in that era, few films which were produced could not be accepted. It caused all the studios branched out into ads and feature film making then a total downfall of the industry is unavoidable.

Thanks to Ram Mohan & Sako; a Japanese film maker together created an exceptional movie known as ‘Ramayana’- the legend of prince Rama. Even though the film was not allowed to be distributed in India, ‘RAMAYANA’ was succeeding overseas and it resulted in bigger appreciation and knowledge about the talent in India.

A change in the situation happened ever since. Many production houses from Europe, United States and Canada started the ball rolling to contract out their post-production work to India due to less labor costs. Their work could be completed in half the cost but they could achieve lots of benefits in cost. India’s talent soon was famous worldwide.

India came to life in 2008 when Cartoon Network managed to acquire kids market and whole animation market. Animation was being presented in normal commercial movies as well when special effects were needed for particular scenes, for example: Aladdin. Until now, India is becoming one of the most productive countries in producing animation specialists. While animation industry is regarded as one of the most rapid growing part of the entertainment and media industry, India still has to improve its technology. All films use special effects and it is better for India to get better in becoming an animation specialists.
